Although Sheila Malory is flattered to be asked to help out at the prestigious Blakeney's School for Girls, she is also apprehensive. For her predecessor, Margaret Hood, had been a charismatic figure with a powerful influence on her select group of pupils. But to her surprise, Sheila finds the girls both friendly and responsive and she is soon absorbed into the life of the school and on good terms with both staff and pupils.
However this pleasant atmosphere is shattered when Felicity Roberts, the glamorous, high-flying headmistress of Blakeney's, is found dead in mysterious circumstances . . .
As Sheila exercises her characteristic intuition and discretion it soon becomes clear to her that there are dark undercurrents at work beneath the orderly surface of school life. And there is no shortage of people who might have wished for Felicity's death . . .
