Product Description

Product Description

This text is an exploration of the relationship between physical and psychological wellbeing. It draws on postmodern and narrative theory to consider the psychosomatic processes which underpin and enhance health. The text adopts a psychoanalytic stance rooted in the work of D.W. Winnicott, and reviews the work of other major psychoanalytic figures on the question of body and mind, enabling students and practitioners to engage with a variety of perspectives.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is very well written with fascinating case studies., 24 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This book - subtitled 'The body and the word' - is aimed at practising psychotherapists, counsellors and health professionals and draws extensively on the work of D.W.Winnicott. However, it is so well and interestingly written that it easily crosses over into a lay readership and should be read by all parents, anybody for whom exercise is or has been central, and anyone concerned by the frequent separation of 'body' and 'mind'.

The theoretical sections are clear and relate directly to the case studies, but can be read separately. The case studies themselves are fascinating. Using the technique of 'infant observation', they cover babies with their parents and demonstrate the child growing into his or her body, the difficulties for them if there are emotional problems, and the child's capacity for recovery. The adult case studies are equally interesting. Together, they form the basis for the concept of 'body storylines'.

For the counsellor or therapist, this offers a way of working which involves the 'narration and re-narration of events that have centrally involved a person's experience and use of physicality'(p190). This is where 'the body' and 'the word' come together - for the benefit of both the professional and the lay reader.
