Product Description

Product Description
The story behind one of the most brutal, tyrannical and dictatorial leaders of modern times. Since becoming president of Iraq in 1979, Saddam Hussein has systematically terrorised a nation, yet little is really known of the inner circle of his regime. Con Coughlin uses research, eye-witness accounts and information from the inner-circle of Hussein's advisors, examines the nature and execution of his tyranny as well as explaining Saddam's rise to power and continuing stranglehold over a nation. This is not simply a political biography. Saddam takes us direct to the heart of his family and private life, illuminating his complex and often contradictory personality. The turbulent world behind the closed doors of his palace is the key to the man and to his regime.

1.0 out of 5 stars who are you kidding, 10 April 2005
By A Customer
This book is as authoritative and reliable as Tony Blair's dodgy dossier with which it has much in common. Lots of 'proof' that Saddam had WMD (sic). Mr Coughlin must be cringing with embarrassment. A quick fix from the archives to cash in on a war, and a lousy read.

5.0 out of 5 stars superb. better than the original., 24 Jan 2005
By A Customer
In this truly magnificent book mr coughlin draws as he did in his first volume on an unparalleled network of sources, contacts, and third rate testimonies. he takes us to the outskirts and no further of Saddam's complex and bewildering regime. Fully revised and updated almost to make it contemporary this wonderful book describes how Saddam took power and immediately set about controlling almost every aspect of Iraqi life. saddam knew better than to meddle in people's private lives. Mr Coughlin examines Saddam's regime both before, during and after its fall, exploring the contradictions of Saddam's private life and lives. Mr Coughlin admits he got into a muddle in his earlier book and here he clears things up nicely. He says Saddam's sponsoring of Islamic fundamentalism was not at odds with his whisky drinking and womanising as he had once thought; it was more like an attraction of equal and mutually exclusive opposites, more Einstein than Baath. He complains that Saddam's reliance on and celebration of family was a negation of his violent and temperamental treatment as a boy, not as a man as he had suspected in the earlier book. Unable to get evidence from family members, servants and staff, Saddam: The Secret Life is uncertain but also enjoyable in its representation of this secretive world. In extra chapters, and with shocking new photographs of Iraqi prisoners being abused by their American and British captors, Mr Coughlin also vividly recounts the last few months of Saddam's reign and his eventual capture by American forces using new and exclusive footage from the BBC. Insightful, penetrating and ultimately shocking, Con Coughlin has written a most capable biography of one of the most dangerous men of the last two decades. The maps at the beginning are excellent.

2.0 out of 5 stars More facts, less gossip please!, 23 Oct 2003
Con Coughlin has appeared with frequency recently, as as 'expert' on Saddam and his regime. I was therefore a little disappointed with this book in that while promising much, it didn't really deliver. The author has lots of revelations about events and people, but little to substantiate them other than he says them. He also seems to accept uncritically US claims about Saddam's linkages to Bin-Laden and al-Qaeda, linkages which even the US have not been keen to continue to promote as they have been exposed as false. An interesting study into Saddam but necessarily should include a warning that it should be taken with a very large pinch of salt!
