Review
Nine weeks after 69-year old Dr Dowan Purcell vanishes without trace after saying goodnight to his colleagues at the Pacific Meadows nursing home, the mystery of his disappearance remains unsolved. Unsatisfied with the efforts of the police and convinced Purcell is still alive, his bitter ex-wife Fiona decides to enlist the help of private detective Kinsey Millhone to track him down. However, his current wife Crystal - almost half his age and an ex-stripper to boot - is just as convinced that Purcell is now dead. Deeply suspicious of Fiona and her motives, Kinsey reluctantly agrees to take the case, and soon discovers that the good doctor may have been in more trouble than anyone could ever have predicted. As mysterious as the disappearance of Purcell is the appearance of Tommy Hevener, a redhead with a passion for Kinsey and a somewhat colourful past. Sue Grafton has earned herself quite a following as a result of her alphabetic crime novel series, and reading this exceptionally well-written and well-paced literary crime novel it's easy to see why. In Kinsey Millhone Grafton has created a refreshing and thoroughly likeable alternative to the scores of hackneyed male detectives that tend to populate the genre. The characterization as a whole is terrific, and Grafton manages to get the balance between background, description and narrative progression just right. The plot itself is entirely believable, with a few neat twists and turns along the way to keep readers on their toes and ensure that things don't get predictable. This is a definite must-read for all fans of the crime genre and anyone who loves a great storyteller. (Kirkus UK)
