A study of the British Army's campaign against the Jewish insurgency in postwar Palestine, this book attempts to show how outdated doctrine, traditional resistance to change and postwar turbulence hampered the army's efforts to modify its counter-insurgency tactics. It attempts to clarify why the security forces failed to develop intelligence sufficient to defeat the insurgents. New light is shed on the dispute over strategy which brought High Commissioner Sir Alan Cunningham and CIGS Field-Marshal Montgomery to a political showdown that the latter won with disasterous consequences for the campaign.
