Product Description
Synopsis
It all started with a little twist of the truth...Sophie Graham is working in a bar when her old school 'friend', Electra, walks in with her parents. Reluctant to admit to this glamorous family that she is a member of staff, Sophie decides to elaborate her dull life, and announces that she is a private investigator. Months later, she is contacted by Electra's wealthy father, who tells her that his daughter has gone missing and he would like to pay Sophie to find her. Sophie, still haunted by disturbing memories of her school days with Electra and the 'in crowd' who had bullied her, and tempted also by the generous sum of money offered, decides she must get involved and agrees to begin the search. But as Sophie lets herself into Electra's apartment for the first time, she opens herself to temptations she never had - a plush home, a closet of designer clothes. She also has reason to contact Electra's friends - the girls she had so hated at school. But will all this lead her to Electra? Or is she being sent on some wild goose chase around the streets of New York? Soon Sophie realises that her lie has exposed her to a conspiracy that will lead her to obsession. 4.0 out of 5 stars Better and better., 26 May 2004

(REAL NAME)
I've been reading Chris Niles' books since I came across a copy of "Spike it" in a 2nd hand bookshop. Now I can't wait for her books to arrive and I've been know to buy the hardback on day one.

I've enjoyed the humour, characters and plots of all her books and I think she's getting better with each one. Vanished amused, intrigued and surprised me. Great stuff.

(Would you agree? Dunno, my favourite crime writers are Michael Pearce, Lawrence Block (Burglar books), Simon Brett (Charles Paris). Etc.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended, 11 Jun 2005
By A Customer
I read a lot and have read a lot of crime stories - it's my favourite genre. Sadly, of late, I've found too many that are unconvincing and/or badly written. Vanished is neither. It's a plausible, engaging, well-written and well-plotted read. I have my own reasons for giving it a four not five stars but that does not mean it is not worth recommending. It is. It's great.

The cover art does the book no favours - it's cheesy. And the premise of the novel as written on the back cover does not sound especially convincing but don't be fooled - it unfolds convincingly. Such is the artistry of the writer.

I was particularly struck by Chris Niles' ear for dialogue. Notably, in the case of an English character who is drawn into the proceedings. It is a skilfully drawn character and the dialogue reads as totally authentic and believable. This is no small compliment.

There are enough twists and turns to keep the reader gripped until the end and none of them feel forced.

I thoroughly enjoyed it as a reading experience and as an entertainment. Thumbs up!
