Review

'Fury is a winner - great bomb-ticking suspense, a wonderful sense of place, fine writing and flesh-and-bones characters. Must reading.' Harlan Coben; 'G. M. Ford is one of my favorite contemporary crime writers. Hilarious, provocative, and as cool as a March night in Seattle, he may be the best-kept secret in mystery novels. With the exhilarating Fury, he's at top of his game and that's as good as it gets' Dennis Lehane

4.0 out of 5 stars a really good read, 27 Jun 2004

I really enjoyed this book, unlike some books of this genre I did not see the end coming and the story progressed at a good pace. Even when you think it is the end it isn't. The characters are interesting and story jumps from place to place but is still easy to follow. I am off to buy the second book!.

2.0 out of 5 stars Did not Enjoy, 20 Sep 2004
By Mark Hughes (Worsley, Lancs United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Frank Corso is a bad main character is he still living in the eighties with his pony tail? The end was obvious to me and i felt the story was dragged out more than it needed to be very very poor story full of characters with no real meaning to the plot. I am sorry but G M Ford just did not do it for me on this occassion.

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting opener, 11 Mar 2004
To begin with, and this may seem pernickety, how can this be the first in an outstanding new crime series? I'm not certain how anyone can claim that it is going to be a) outstanding and b) a series when this is the first one written. That claim aggravated me from the beginning and may have coloured my view of what is, after all, a competently written crime thriller. It does appear that the standard for crime books these days is the "maverick" outsider who can solve all ills and the hero here is no exception.
However, in order to prove his "maverickness" the author has actually succeeded in making him aggravating rather than interesting and leaves too many unknowns about the past dangling. The character has not yet been established and the past DOES bear some relation on his present and therefore how we, the reader, relate to and judge his actions.
Its not a bad read, however, and the authors use of language is effective in building both the plot and the tension. The problem is that the plot, like the hero, leaves me feeling that somehow we've seen it all before.

4.0 out of 5 stars Scratchy and edgy
There is something likeable about the hero of this thriller, Frank Corso. He's not a cop but a reporter and, despite his stereotypical hard-man persona, he is vulnerable... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the sizzler we were told it would be
I was disappointed with the tired revamping of a ponytailed journalist who lives on his boat and eshews the public eye. Read more
