Product Description

Product Description

The compelling drama of one man abandoned in a hostile land, with an impossible mission. It is January 1943 and, in the shabby attic of the SOE headquarters in Baker Street, an unloved department is given the most crucial task of its short existence - to redeem the whole organisation in Churchill's eyes by assassinating Adolf Hitler. Finding the right man for the mission seems increasingly impossible, until the junior officer in this tiny team himself volunteers. Dropped into Bavaria in the guise of a wounded German officer, Lusty is forced to kill a village policeman to protect his cover - thus putting a ruthless detective called Jager on his trail. After winning the confidence of Hitler's mistress, Eva Braun, the assassin is getting ever closer to his target but, just as he is about to make the hit, a change in Allied policy scuppers his plans. Hunted by Jager, pursued by the Gestapo, with his escape route across the border closing, Lusty also finds himself betrayed by London...Alone in a darkening land, with every man turned against him, Lusty's fate now rests in the hands of the local woman who has fallen in love with him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Rivetting, 27 Sep 2002
This review is from: The Devil's Handshake (Hardcover)
I have read Murray Davies's last two books and enjoyed them - but this one is on a different level. It is not just the research which, as you would expect, is impeccable, but the strength of the characters, the twists of plot and sub plots, the sheer pace of the narrative. Women are often put off by adventure books, fearing they will turn out to be Boys Own Ripping Yarns. The Devil's Handshake will appeal to women as much as to men. There are so many convincing characters, some of whom you loath, some you cheer. The effortless plausibility of the characters carries the book forward. I knew one ending of the book - Hitler was not assassinated - but I didn't care. I wanted to know what happened to all the other characters, the ones I'd come to hate but especially the ones I identified with. The Devil's Handshake is a great book and a great read. Buy it and prepare to be late for work, skip meals and sleep less until you've finished it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Murray Davies Fan, 13 Jul 2006

Another fabulous book by Murray Davies. As ever the research is meticulous; it is as good as history textbook in this regard. The charcters and the plot are irresistable and you will not be able to put it down. The only weakness was that the book had to finish at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars What planet are we on?, 23 April 2008

I am certain that the 5* reviews for this author are rigged.

The theme is facile - the ending is apparant after 10 pages.

The writing smacks of a college course.

I will take some convincing that it is not his associates who have 5 * it!
