Now before you write Wow! off as yet another Bridget Jones wannabe, there 's a twist. Ruby's got a stalker--a secret admirer who's seriously obsessed with her and is about to close in on his prey. The knowledge that he's out there, watching and waiting as Ruby trips from one celebrity do to another, gives this debut novel an assured chill, a tension that cuts through the otherwise glossy, albeit fabulously bitchy, showbiz world of Wow!. --Jane Honey
Review
Claudia Pattison was for four years a senior staff writer for the celebrity gossip magazine OK! and her experiences there provide the inspiration and information for a novel whose leading character is senior staff writer on the celebrity gossip magazine Wow! Ruby Lake, heroine and narrator, lets us in on all the secrets behind the pages of 'at home' photoshoots with daytime TV hosts and sun-kissed holiday snaps with B-list soap stars (the magazine pays through the nose, then Ruby writes up the interviews using the journalistic equivalent of the air brush to present the 'stars' as simply marvellous people, regardless of their true natures). The finances and organisation behind a truly A-list exclusive - such as a superstar wedding - are fascinating, and a sobering reminder of how out of hand the whole cult of celebrity has become. And it is irresistible to play the guessing game about which real life celebs were the originals for Pattison's fictional creations - the American pop diva who lets her dogs foul the carpets of the five star hotel suite, the quiz show host who cannot keep his hands off the nanny, the old rocker's spoilt brat daughter.... As well as all these engrossing goodies there is also a plot: Ruby is being stalked by an ingenious 'secret admirer' who sends her increasingly bizarre and disturbing gifts and threatens to upset her burgeoning relationship with a handsome young gardener. The fact that the unveiling of said stalker - before anything remotely resembling a terrifying climax has occurred - is a total damp squib, matters not. The real point of this funny and lively book is to dish the dirt on the trade secrets of the celebrity mags, which it does in magnificently enjoyable style. (Kirkus UK)
