5.0 out of 5 stars A gem of a book, 13 Aug 2006
This review is from: Man Overboard (Paperback)
Haven't enjoyed a book as much in ages. Tim Binding gets right inside the mind of an Englishman of a certain time and background and produces a highly entertaining and scintillatingly well written portrait of such a man, how he'd cope with war, how he'd respond to his country's call and how his relationships would take a back seat when he did. Some of the reviewers quoted on the cover seem to think the underlying thesis of the book is the author's own work, and it isn't (the book "Frogman Spy" got there first), but other than that all the praise this book gets is fully merited. Simply delightful.

3.0 out of 5 stars Oh what an annoying Englishman..., 30 Jul 2009
This review is from: Man Overboard (Paperback)
I struggled halfway through to keep going, but forced myself to finish it. I thought the Commander Crabb character a bit of a cartoon Englishman, and as a result more than a little irritating. The book is narrated by Crabb often in clipped sentences, being determinedly superficial about much around him. He may really have been like that, but it doesn't make for good reading. An example of kind of dialogue that grates: "Oh Crabbie. You are such a fool, you know."
"I know that. Absolutely. Don't deserve you. Don't deserve anyone, most likely. Bloody stupid idea, dressing up like that. Never do it again. Frogsuit utterly banished from the homestead." "Tell you what, Pat. I'll skidaddle with the unmentionable. You go and ablute yourself..." Grrr.

I know very little about the history of the real Crabb, but in the tussle between Britain and the USSR in the mid 50's, I found neither of the possibilities posed by the book to be likely - that Crabb was either sent out to be captured by the Russians so that he could later spy for Britain, or that he was tricked by Russian agents into being caught so that he could be used by the Russians to train their own frogmen. Too much of a has-been for either.

To me his service as a frogman, as described in the book, seemed rather amateurish, and one suspects that his demise was brought about by incompetence, not necessarily all on his part. So interesting in parts, but a very annoying bunch of characters, none more so than Crabb himself. Tim Binding has written better books than this.
