Product Description

Review
The editors claim that this collection of short stories is a manifesto, a statement of intent that rebels against male crime writers patronising their female counterparts, particularly when awards are being given. Few literary revolutions have been born out of the fact that the wrong people are being presented with trinkets at prizegivings, but if this innovative selection is unlikely to tear at the very fabric of literature, it will at least give some fine entertainment along the way. Duffy and Hendersen have collected an A-list of women writers - stars of both chick lit and crime writing - and set them loose, telling them to make a 'leap in the future of female crime writing' and to take the opportunity to write what their own editors would normally reject. As a result, there is some excellent writing across a variety of mood and styles, challenging stereotypes of both crime writing and feminine preoccupations. Val McDermid writes a story of lesbian sexual obsession; Martine Cole's is a more straightforward tale of a wife's revenge. Liza Cody sells her soul to the devil while Jenny Colgan journeys with undesirables on the London Underground. Lisa Jewell's revenge tale is macabre, weird and funny and Duffy's is a tale of a sexual being finding fulfillment. What they have in common (apart from a tendency to link back to sex) is the high level of quality and the sense of authors being let off the leash to try something new and liberating. The female of the species is thus proven to be quite as deadly as the male and, in many cases, far sexier, sharper and more able to twist the stiletto. (Kirkus UK)

No meek and mild heroines here. They're tough and uncompromising and take no prisoners.

2.0 out of 5 stars not worth the money, 2 Jul 2004
i bought this book because i love writers like katy munger, val mcdermid, lisa jewell, sparkle hayter and lauren henderson whose books i find funny, engrossing and would recommend to anyone looking for a book that is more than just crime fiction.

this anthology may have been well written but it is not full of 'female sleuths', many of the stories where women plotting how to kill a lover, (usually another women) when they are finnished having great sex.

the only story i actually liked was liz evan's "pussy galore", i read all four grace smith novels in the following week.

if you are looking for copious amounts of unneeded sex this is the book for you. maybe the writers need to reasses their ideas about tart noir, less tart more noir would be a start.

if you are looking for a good crime fiction read stick to the actual books written by the above writers.

if you are looking for a tough female slueth who has a real story and great sex try jean m. redmann, hard to get hold of copies of these books but well worth the effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Read Required? See below...., 13 Oct 2002

...This is an anthology which left me reeling. It is filled with exceptionally good stories from exceptionally good writers, a few of whom were totally unexpected. It is rare to find an anthology that delivers on every sotry, but this one does this and so much more. I would be hard pushed to recommend anything else so worth reading to you, and I think congratulations are in order to all concerned, particularly the editors for not only contributing, but organising this tour de force anthology. Buy it, buy it now. If you have any interest in women in crime fiction or women writing some damn good fiction, you won't be sorry you did.

2.0 out of 5 stars more tart, less noir..., 30 Sep 2002
By A Customer
just a word of warning, but don't be misled by the blurb on this book...

Mentioning Philip Marlowe and the word 'sleuths' kinda led me to believe that this was a female detective anthology... kinda like the fiction Sparkle Hayter and Lauren Henderson write. Yeah, maybe not... Silly old me.

The emphasis is very much on the 'tart' part of the title in most of the stories here - to the extent that they get a teeny bit repetitive. I'm at a loss to see as to how some of the heroines of these stories are 'saving the world' in stilettoes or otherwise - mostly, they're just criminals, out to get laid.

Not a whole lot of brain work involved. They're mostly committing crime, rather than solving it - not exactly how this anthology is being sold, as far as i can tell. A couple of stories are so downright bizarre - I'm curious as to the appeal of Vicki Hendrick's 'Stormy, Mon Amour', and Jenny Colgan's 'The Wrong Train' was downright silly. Belief was not so much suspended, as completely negated...

A few pieces are entertaining, at least - Jen Banbury's 'Take, for Example, Meatpie' is highly original, while Lisa Jewell's 'Labia Lobelia' is more a helping of fluffy chicklit than crime-fic... complete with revenge courtesy of Bette Davis' ghost. As you do... Stella Duffy's 'Martha Grace' is a sensory feast - probably the best written of the bunch - complete with lavish descriptions of food and sex. Designed to make you crave homemade chocolate tart and teenage boys, apparently... pretty damn effective.

Not a total loss, then - but not really what i paid my money for. A little less sex and chicklit would have done more for this, as it were - you kinda get the impression that getting the man (or woman, in a couple of cases) into bed is all that matters (or murdering them if they're not quite up to scratch). And that just gets boring after a while...
