5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, 6 May 2007
By xjambix (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Love Life (Paperback)
It was a wonderfully written book, with real people with the real things that happen in life. I cried all the way through it and at one point I was even considering not reading any further because it was so upsetting. But I couldn't put this book down. It's an amazing book, please read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to read but ultimately uplifting, 16 July 2007
This review is from: Love Life (Paperback)
This book sent me through a rollercoaster of emotions, as others have said. On the one hand I found it impossible to empathise with chronic philanderer Dan and was disheartened by his behaviour and the amoral behaviour of other characters who initially appeared to be decent. But at the same time the love that he bears his wife, and the way that these same people behaved in other ways, is uplifting and inspiring. Be warned: this isn't an easy book to read. It is a no holds barred description of the devastation wrought by cancer and as other reviewers have said at some points I wasn't sure if I could continue reading due to the brutal honesty of the text.

The book is easy to read and difficult to put down - not a book I'd read twice, but one I'm glad I've read, even though I disliked many of the chracters in it. It raised some questions within me about 'right' and 'wrong' and, above all, gave me faith in love, even in flawed form. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sad, awful, beautiful. I loved it., 21 Jun 2009
By Love Books "Jessie" (Durham, England) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Love Life (Paperback)
I don't know how to start to review this book it's so different to almost anything I've ever read before. It's the saddest, most refreshingly honest, intelligent, surprisingly tender and even sometimes humorous account of love, sex and death. At times I wanted to slap the narrator, but I think ultimatley his selfishness, and his adultery, were simply tactics for him to cope with the impending death of his beloved wife. It reminded me of the desperation of the narrator in The Love of my Life. I think everyone should read this book, just go in without preconceptions, and try not to judge.
