Product Description

Product Description

Colette Bryce's The Heel of Bernadette was one of the most highly praised new collections of recent years, winning both the Aldeburgh Prize for best first collection, and the Strong Award for best new Irish poet. Her second, The Full Indian Rope Trick – the title poem already the winner of the 2003 National Poetry Competition – sees a leap forward in confidence and range, with Bryce's dark lyric and darker wit finding many different voices. Whatever subject the poet takes – an Ulster childhood and the child's growing awareness of her divided community, the surreal life of the natural world, or the more disturbing shadows thrown by our love and desire – it is always addressed with both a compelling emotional candour and an astonishingly musical intelligence.

Pillar Talk

That magician/who stationed himself on a pillar/over Manhattan/for thirty-five hours/knows nothing whatever/of loneliness/or how it is/for people like us/who have no soft acre/of cardboard boxes/not even the eggshell/flashbulbs of the press/or the well-meant antics/of neighbours with a mattress/to temper the thought/of the hard, hard earth,/to break the fall./Nothing at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Collection, 1 May 2007
By A.R. "Alex" (Bangor, N.Ireland) - See all my reviews
I bought this collection at the same time as her first, 'The Heel of Bernadette', and was pleased to see that both show a confident writer, who is certainly worthy of the acclaim she has received in recent years.

The poems in this collection vary in tone and style, and yet I feel the collection fits together seamlessly.

Whereas many other Northern Irish poets focus on the political aspect of the Northern Irish conflict, Bryce speaks from a more personal point of view, hailing back to her own childhood experiences, not just of the troubles, but of her first meeting with a protestant girl, seeing the rich kids drive by and more.

Poems from later in the collection draw on her adult life and love. Some of this work is darker than those who read her first collection may be accustomed to, but it showcases a great depth of emotion.

I can make a sweeping statement and say that every poem in this collection comes across with a very musical rhythm, that shows that each line has been most carefully considered.
