'Stylish, witty and constantly entertaining... Jeffrey Archer has a natural aptitude for short stories' THE TIMES

Product Description

Two friends fall under the spell of a New York beauty - with quite unexpected results. An offhand remark is taken seriously by a Chinese sculptor, and a British diplomat becomes the owner of a priceless work of art. An insurance claims advisor has a most surprising encounter on the train home to Sevenoaks. These are the openings to three of this marvellous collection of stories that ends with a hauntingly-written, atmospheric account of two undergraduates at Oxford in the thirties, a tale of bitter rivalry that ends in a memorable love story. 'Stylish, witty and constantly entertaining ...Jeffrey Archer has a natural aptitude for short stories' - "The Times."

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating and enthralling from the get-go, 9 Sep 2001
Jeffrey Archer proves with this effort that he is one of the most talented writers of fictional stories there is. I particularly enjoyed 'One Night Stand' which deals with the stoney ground of mutual attraction and delves into the mind of both parties in various situations. If you appreciate a good quality short story after the other then you will find this to be a suitable purchase.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Quiver full of Arrows...or a missed target?, 2 May 2008
A collection of 12 short stories written by one of my favourite authors proved a little disappointing. I'm not a particular fan of short stories; I prefer to invest time into characters and a plot. The title of the book suggests that you will be reading a collection of short, sharp tales which will drive a point home.

There is a sense of "and the moral of this story is" with this collection. There's also a heavy focus on Oxford, where Archer studied and obviously has fond memories of, and of the life of the privileged classes in general. Some tend to alienate, some are mildly amusing and others are just plain silly - The First Miracle being a case in point.

Each story is undoubtedly well written by the intelligent, articulate and literate Archer. However, I was a long way from being bowled over, as I have been by his other work.

Another triumph for Jeffrey Archer, his fans will be pleased with this book, as I am ! This is yet another well written book containing short stories. It has all the classic traits of wit and suspense that you come to expect from Jeffrey, to keep you reading on and wanting more. Jeffrey writes extremely well and gives full value for money in this book right up until the last page. This book is another gem and I recommend it, it is highly entertaining !

I agree with the previous reviewer wholeheartedly. Jeffrey Archer is undoubtedly one of the best storytellers I've ever read. No wonder this is a number 1 bestseller! Read more
