4.0 out of 5 stars The new Chandler?, 24 Sep 2002
Robert Eversz's heroine, Nina Zero, is new to me. She has appeared in an earlier book called Shooting Elvis; however this does not prevent a new reader enjoying this crafty book.

Eversz has recreated the LA noir so familiar from Chandler, those old black and white movies and Chinatown. The seediness and corruption of Chandler's LA is artfully mirrored in this present day humorous story of a baby photographer and jailbird turned paparazzo. Told with a straight face the journey takes us from prison through a marriage of convenience to the inferno of this crime laden and selfish city.

Nina earns $2,000 in return for marrying an English paparazzo so that he can get a green card. That's when her real troubles begin. As the bodies of photographers pile up, each with a roll of film stuffed in their mouth, Nina finds herself both on the receiving end of police hostility and suspicion and the likely next victim of a serial killer. The only solution is for her to find the killer before he gets to her or before the police get an excuse to put her behind bars again.

Using her skills, contacts and flitting from one crazy scenario to another Nina manages to keep alive, earn a living and as in any great crime thriller she catches the killer, but only just.

This is a refreshing rendition to the LA crime genre, at once violent and funny, sexy and sad, and a great send up of the press, television, the police, the probation service, Hollywood and much, much more.

Enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wickedly black and murderously funny, 11 Jul 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Killing Paparazzi (Paperback)
Robert Eversz has a way with conventions, an ability to flip them on their side and create something fresh and new. Thus this book starts with the heroine of Shooting Elvis Nina Zero getting out of jail and deciding to make a fresh start with her life. Unfortunately that fresh start involves a green card marriage worth $2,000 to a charming but unreliable Englishman and that's only the start of her problems. Very black, very entertaining - this is the sort of book which keeps you reading into the small hours if only to find out how Nina gets out of trouble and whether or not she is capable of living a more normal life. Overall a fresh and funny novel with one modern literature's most entertainingly laconic heroines. One warning: it's better to read Shooting Elvis first otherwise some of the heroine's motivations might be slightly difficult to understand.
