Product Description

Product Description
For over 20 years Reinhold Messner has been obsessed with the secret of the Yeti, the Himilayan creature of legend, who in the West became infamously known as the abominable snowman. Rather than fruitless speculation, Messner - the first person to climb Mount Everest without oxygen and the first to climb all 14 of the world's tallest peaks - provides his own first hand account. He begins by recouting his own terrifying run-ins with the Yeti - while hiking alone in remote parts of Nepal - and how they led to his determination to solve their mystery through seubsequent expeditions. This is an account of a quest, taking readers on hair-raising climbs through Nepal, Bhutan, Ladakh, Northern India, and even Tibet - where Messner was a fugitive from Chinese authorities.

About the Author
Reinhold Messner is known as one of history's greatest Himalayan mountaineers. He was the first person to climb all 14 of the world's 8,000-meter peaks, many of them solo. Climber, writer, photographer and filmmaker, Messner has published more than 30 books. He is currently an MEP, based in Brussels. He lives in Austria.

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting yarn, 6 Jan 2009
This book starts with the author treking in Tibet, where he spots a Yeti and follows it over the space of a couple of hours. He firmly states that it definately isn't a bear or an ape and by the end of the book changes his mind and says Yeti sightings are probably bear sightings. The book gets interesting when it gets into more outragous theories like yetis abducting women and having children with them, or that Yetis came from Cro-mags mixing with vegeterian ice bears that they kept as pets. It is really in the lunatic fringe, but if you are intersted in myths & legends you will enjoy it.
