Review

'McGown can be relied on to produce a first-rate puzzle.' Sunday Telegraph; 'One of the most seriously underrated crime novelists around' The Times

Product Description

It's three days before Christmas, and the Malworth Amateur Dramatic Society's rehearsal of Cinderella, scripted by GP Carl Gignall, is struggling thanks to a flu epidemic that has hit the production.

But as rehearsals finally get under way at the Riverside Theatre, the police across town are entering Carl's house - and discovering the body of his wife, Estelle...

Why was Carl so late for rehearsal? Why is Dr Bignall's neighbour so reluctant to tell the truth about what he witnessed? And why is Dr Denis Leeward, Carl's partner, sitting in his car, slightly bruised and in a state of guilty panic?

All dectective Chief Inspector Lloyd knows for sure, as he takes charge of the investigation, is that one of them is a murderer...

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic whodunnit, 1 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Scene of Crime (Hardcover)
A return to the brevity of Ms McGown's earlier works, 'Scene Of Crime' is a short, tightly-plotted murder mystery of the highest calibre. The epic nature of the previous 'Plots and Errors' has been cut down into a relatively straightforward whodunnit with no pretensions and less clever trickery than its predecessor. Vintage McGown - and the ending brings a tear to the eye of any reader who has followed Lloyd and Hill's love story throughout the years!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another classical puzzler from Ms McGown, 30 April 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Scene of Crime (Hardcover)
Finally another Jill McGown novel has appeared, and her plotting remains as tight as ever. Quite a slim novel, but not surprisingly after the last book, the mammoth 'Plots and Errors'. It is perhaps more successful than her last however in that it is a return to a classical puzzle.

Unlike the reviewers below I didn't feel the loss of Judy in her pregnancy - she does contribute to the solution, and the idea of a heavily gravid policewoman chasing round Bartonshire wouldn't have worked. And it gets the extra star because it is a puzzle based on the intricate, logical unravelling of plausible stories until the whole, shocking truth is revealed.....

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to the Lloyd/Hill series., 25 April 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Scene of Crime (Hardcover)
I enjoyed this latest addition to the Lloyd/Hill series very much. Jill McGown weaves a spellbinding plot around some very interesting characters in this book. Lots of focus in this one on timelines around the murder McGown really exercising her readers' thought processes! Left this particular reader unable to put the book down till the conclusion and gasping for the next thrilling Lloyd/Hill instalment!! Lloyd in his usual excellent form but missed Judy whilst she is busy on her private production!!! It was good to see Tom Finch highlighted in this one. Scene of Crime is a terrific read as are all of McGown's Lloyd/Hill series.
