Product Description

Manchester Evening News, 29.10.99

Val McDermid says of Past Reason: 'Anguished and agonising, Past Reason reveals the terrible things that people do to each other as the lives of the central characters unravel for the most unexpected of reasons. A complex and multi-layered narrative set vividly in Liverpool, this journey into psychological suspense should not be missed.' --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Sunday Express 28.11.99

Natasha Cooper's comments: 'Past Reason is a world away from the modern serial-killer thriller and the old-fashioned English village murder mystery. It shows how crime fiction can move and excite, while at the same time exploring important - and controversial - aspects of the modern world.' --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars she just gets better and better, 8 Jan 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Past Reason (Hardcover)
I have read all Margaret Murphy's books, and can only say that she GETS BETTER AND BETTER!!! Just when you think that she, like many other (unnameable) crime writers, must surely have reached her peak and be ready for that downwards slide into tired plot line and trite characterisation - she pulls another trick out of the bag - Past Reason is beautifully crafted, with a serious, clear-eyed look at a controversial subject (recovered memory syndrome/false memory syndrome) - couldn't put it down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compulsive and often moving psychological thriller, 5 Nov 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Past Reason (Hardcover)
Jenny Campell had promised her husband Fraser that they would take a break from fostering. Then a small boy, wearing only nightclothes,is found wandering the streets and Jenny is called on to help. The child refuses to speak, is plainly traumatised and is extremely anxious around Fraser. A nationwide appeal is launched to uncover the boy's identity. In Past Reason other mysteries interweave with this central one and the author continually keeps us guessing about exactly who has done what and why. She directs our suspicions first to one character then another as we try to make sense of the puzzles. And she plays with the notion of identity; a central theme in the book, so that at times we are also trying to work out who a character is or how they connect to others. Not only is the book cleverly plotted but the characters are well-drawn and believable and the dialogue is excellent in conveying character and moving the action on. The story builds to a hearstopping and brutal climax. I found it a compulsive, often moving and thoroughly enjoyable read.
