Product Description

Product Description

Biological terrorism is widely acknowledged to be inevitable. In the former Soviet Union the military has perfected smallpox, anthrax and Plague as biological warheads on intercontinental missiles that can reach London, New York and Los Angeles. In South Africa and Zimbabwe, biological weapons have already been used to kill innocent victims. To reveal these stories, the authors have secured the co-operation of the American Department of Defence, the United Nations and various civilian and military intelligence agencies. Here is a factual account that reads like fiction: a taut investigation behind the headlines which identifies the real Plague Warriors, those behind the new weapons of horror, and the men and women dedicated to defending us against them.

From the Publisher

'Begins where fiction leaves off' - Tom Clancy
'Fascinating . . . an excellent and timely introduction to this alarming subject' - Washington Times

Biological warefare - the use of deadly bacteria and exotic viruses to destroy, maim, infect or incapacitate the enemy - is now widely acknowledged to be inevitable.

In the former Soviet Union the military has perfected smallpox, anthrax and Plague as biological warheads on intercontinental missiles that can reach London, New York and Los Angeles. In South Africa and Zimbabwe, biological weapons have already been used to kill innocent civilians. A millionth of a gram of inhaled anthrax, delivered through a purse-sized atomizer spray, kills one person; a mere kilogram, delivered through an ordinary crop duster, kills an entire city.

Here is a factual account that reads like fiction; a taut investigation behind the headlines which identifies the real Plague Warriors, those behind the new weapons of horror, and the men and women dedicated to defending us against them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read & understand, 12 Aug 2003

By coincidence I was reading this book as the news about Dr David Kelly became known. Dr Kelly features very prominently in this book, and its a pity that such a fine individual met such a tragic end. Tom Mangold's book pulls together an excellent story over the decades. Very easy to read and to understand. Would be nice to see a revised edition with more information about Iraq post-2001.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Read, 11 Jul 2006
This book is a must for anyone interested in the field of biological warfare. I am a CBRN specialist, currently teaching the subject at a Navy school, and I learned things from this book I had never heard before but have since confirmed. The book has now been added to the school's reference library. Mr. Mangold did get his wires crossed when referring to organo-phosphates as 'toxins'... they're actually classified as 'toxic chemicals' and are not covered under the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention. This, however, was a very minor slip in an otherwise outstanding book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary story of undercover biological warfare., 25 Nov 1999
By A Customer
I have read this book from cover to cover and it is a gripping story about how Britain, Russia and America are tooling up for the ultimate war -- with biological weapons. The authors have had good access to some intelligence material and explain how the world has been experimenting with terrible diseases like anthrax and bubonic plague. The authors say biological warfare is inevitable. I hope not. The pictures are good too.
