Product Description

Product Description
There were two splashes in London that night: the first was a body dropping into the Thames with a bullet hole in its head; and the second was tabloid crime hack Max Chard's exclusive story on the killing. But murder is only half the yarn.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top crime read, 20 Dec 2001
By A Customer
Readers wishing for a humorous insight into the antics of our Fleet Street friends the press should check out Hack.
John Burns, a former Daily Express journalist from its pre-Richard Desmond glory days, puts his talent for fiction - an occasional must for every hack - to good use in this rollicking read.
Max Chard, Burns's gloriously mercenary chief crime reporter, drinks, smokes and womanises his way through scandal, while managing to stitch up an evil celeb or two.
From alcohol-soaked lunches and dodgy expenses to the joys of doorstepping, Hack has it all.
Part lament for the joys of old Fleet Street, part expose on the sordid world of tabloid journalism, Burns pulls no punches.
Journos will apreciate its comedy, everyone else will be shocked at the sort of things the press gets up to - or maybe not.
A great read, highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read!, 12 Nov 2000

I found "Hack" a brilliant read. I haven't read any of John Burns' other work, but I will certainly have a look for more! Hack presented a deep story to me and I would recommend it to anyone. If you're looking for an interesting read, buy this book!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hack Attack, 16 Oct 2007

Max Chard is your stereotypical tabloid journalist; nasty, vindictive, rude and funny! After stumbling across the dead body of a rich eco-friendly French woman he finds himself digging deeply into her past and discovering that her good deeds may have not gone unpunished. Can Chard and his monkey photographer friend uncover the truth behind the name Candy? More importantly can they avoid being shot long enough to get another round in?

John Burns has created in Max Chard a character that is both repulsive and attractive at the same time. There is a wonderful balance between genuine humour, clever insights and a great central mystery. Burns was once a journalist himself and this comes through in the book as he drops lots of genius tips and tricks that tabloid hacks use to get a story. It is the central anti-hero of Chard that really makes the book as you love to hate him - he may be bad, but the people he is after are far worse. I recommend this to fans of comedy crime novels such as those by Colin Bateman.
