Amazon.co.uk Review

To those lucky enough to have read her, it will come as no surprise that Kathy Lette's new book is outrageous, savage, and quite hilarious. In such irreverent books as Foetal Attraction, Lette has redefined both the sex war and survival tactics for women in terms that are entirely her own. Her heroine this time is Becky Steele (Is it an accident that the name so resembles the spiky heroine of Thackeray's Vanity Fair?), who is wondering about how serious a breach of etiquette it is to run out on one's own wedding. Clinging to the window ledge of her parents' bathroom, she finds herself wondering whether her intended, Julian, a human rights lawyer, is suitable for a women who shouldn't really be married. Of course, Becky's problem is the same as the hero of many a male novel--has she encountered enough sexual variety? There is, for instance, the rock star toyboy Zack, a man whose libido is almost as out of control as Becky's. And before she arrives at her reluctant decision, there is an equal ratio of hard decisions and a considerable testing of bedsprings, all of which is the perfect justification for Lette's mordant wit and coruscating one-liners. --Barry Forshaw --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kathy Lette is firing on all cylinders now!, 17 Aug 1999

I bought this book to take on holiday and it made me laugh so much all the others on the holiday wanted to read it after me! My mum has just read in on my recommendation and she loved it too. Kathy Lette's talent for characters has become even better since Foetal Attraction and she definitely has 'girl power'. It has inspired me in all sorts of ways.

5.0 out of 5 stars Her best book yet!, 7 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Like most people, I love a good laugh. However, no book has made me guffaw and cry tears of laughter as much as "Altar Ego". I read "Foetal Attraction" after this one but found that nothing could possibly top this novel. I honestly couldn't put it down. I found myself identifying with the characters, especially Becky, laughing, crying and cheering throughout. I have owned a copy of this book for eight months and read it at least once each month. Well done Kathy on a brilliant story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kathy's best! :), 14 Dec 2003
I have read nearly all of Kathy Lette's books, and although it is hard to pick a favourite, this is, in my opinion, the best one. I love the way that she can make a heroine whom you would consider a horrible human being if you knew her in real life appear to deserve the sympathy, and not to mention laughs, that all heroines get. The book is also extremely funny - not a good choice for a bedtime story as it kept me so wide awake with its laugh-a-minute style!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another cracker from Lette
Having read both Mad Cows and Girl's Night out I feel that Altar Ego is the best to date. It is again in Lette's own witty style and is very enjoyable.
