Product Description

5.0 out of 5 stars Bold innovation, 26 Feb 2001
By A Customer
A highly original attempt to ask the question: 'How does one person ever get to know another?' and to use the biographical form to explore this issue. Don't expect a novel in the traditional sense, more an essay: and then you can't fail to get something out of this

1.0 out of 5 stars Too clever for his own good, 14 May 2000
By A Customer
Given the generally sorry state of literature these days, I suppose it is no wonder that this book has been so highly praised. Clearly the author is clever and well read, although this does not necessarily mean he can produce a good story. In this case, he surely didn't. While the premise is amusing, its development collapses under the heavy weight of a lot of ponderous and pedantic observations about famous authors and their biographers that were thrown in, it seemed, when even de Botton grew bored with the story at hand. After a very short time, I found this book quite irritating despite the odd witty remark here and there.

5.0 out of 5 stars good if not perfect, 9 May 2001
By A Customer
It's true that this isn't de Botton's greatest book, but then, he's one of those writers who is interesting even when he's not on top form. His voice is highly readable - a bit like Ian McEwan or Philip Roth. Once you finish one page, you just naturally want to read on. And the character at the heart of this story is totally loveable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting take on the art of biography
Although I think this book ran out of steam by the end, it provoked a lot of thought about the nature of biography, and what it means to 'get to know' another individual. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars A huge disappointment
Given how much I enjoyed ESSAYS ON LOVE and THE ROMANTIC MOVEMENT, I found this extremely disappointing. Slow, pointless and uninteresting. AVOID IT.

5.0 out of 5 stars first-class writing
This is a highly intelligent and literate examination of both fiction and biography: a clever, ironic study in both genres which casts doubt on both and intrigues the reader... Read more
