4.0 out of 5 stars A well-written and useful insight, 14 May 2002
By A Customer
This book from Karl Sabbagh documents the entire design process from the initial drawings to the final roll-out of the aircraft.

For the most part the book is well-written and informative, although with such a wide-ranging subject to cover, there are times the book appears to "skimp" on detail. In addition, Sabbagh has a tendency to display his ignorance of the technicalities of the subject and fails to explain complex concepts clearly.

One theme that runs particularly well through the book is that of the management environment of the project, and the useful influence that the senior management team at Boeing had on the successful delivery of the project. The reader comes away feeling that (s)he has come to know the characters almost personally and this human side of the story is particularly welcome in a subject that might otherwise have appeared stale.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, A fascinating insight into airliners, 31 Jan 2001
By A Customer
It has now been 5 years since the aircraft featured, the Boeing B777-200, had entered service with Lauch customer, US Giant United Airlines (UAL) and it has already sprouted many new variants. However, it started from one goal from the Boeing company, and in particular Alan Mulally (A charismatic man, evident in this narrative), that the next generation of airliner would be what the airlines wanted, not what the company thought they wanted. This is "Working Together", which was the motto of the project, and the name of the first aircraft. Karl followed the developement from its early beginnings as a development of the successful B767 series, into a fully-fledged "eagle" of its own right. In this book he covers the most detailed aspects of the development- things the bystander would not imagine would have to be done were done- like freezing an inch of ice over a door and opening it to see if it can work, or scraping the (expensive!!) tail of the plane down Edwards AFB's runway to work out take-off distances! All of this and more is present, yet presented in an easy to understand way, although some aviation knowledge may be required, but it is not too technincal. For the fearful flyer among us, Karl re-assures you, and I assure you to read this book to find out just how much force an aircrafts wings will hold before they snap- and think of a rubber duck when he describes this. (They'd balanced one on the wingtip and it flew!) All in all, an absolutely fascinating read into the unseen world of the Aviation Engineers, Airline executives and all the snags that come wit them!!
