4.0 out of 5 stars A fine book...but not as fulfilling as you might like., 25 Dec 1999
By A Customer
Where to start? May has done herself proud here, with a fine conclusion to a saga that I spent a long time wishing wouldn't end, and an equal amount of time begging bookshop owners to "give me the book I know it's here somewhere!"

The plot is still wonderfully crafted around Marc and his...coterie, seen as a retrospective through the memoirs of Uncle Rogi. Knowing (if you've read the Exiles Saga) what happens, though not the mechanics of it, makes the end all the more poignant.

The imagery conjured up is, as usual, superb...you can almost see Marc's CE Rig, and he is, without doubt, Abbadon, the angel of the abyss. Beyond that we have the (rather subtle) Miltonian symbology..a sympathetic Lucifer figure? Heh.

The only gripe is that the conclusion was just not suitably..apocalyptic, given what it was meant to symbolise, for both sides. Ah well.

In all other respects, a fine book and a great conclusion to a fabulous trilogy of books. Now go and buy the others (esp Intervention!) if you haven't already.

I'm off to the Metaphysic Congress, looking for a boy with piercing Coercer eyes...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, 24 Jul 2007
This is still one of the best books I have read. Sequel to Jack-the-Bodiless which is my favourite book of them all.
Magnificat is Marc Remillard who appeared in the Saga of the Exiles and he is my favourite character in the series. It is great to see a book where the main characters use supernatural powers throughout.

3.0 out of 5 stars A very disapointing end to a classic series of novels., 2 April 2000
After crafting an intelligent and gripping environment with the preceding and subsequent volumes the author seems to have lost inertia during the second half of this offering. The continuity between this and the Saga of The Exiles is a little lacking and a much more forceful ending to this trilogy was required. However, this is a must read for any Galactic Milieu fans so prepare to be disallusioned.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good conclusion of the Galactic Milieu
A fine conclusion of the story which began with Intervention. Especially Rogatien's family story is excellent. Read more
