A detailed, if hagiographic, account of Ali's public career and private life. Hauser (author of one of the best books ever on the fight game, 1985's Black Lights) is an obvious and uncritical fan of Ali's, whom he apotheosizes early on as "the most recognizable person on earth." In aid of what might be called oral biography, Hauser draws on over 200 sources - acquaintances, associates, opponents, friends, enemies, blood relations, and celebrity observers of the sometime title-holder - to create a composite portrait that's longer on sympathetic assertions than reflective insight. The ranks of the commentators include the oddly coupled likes of: Cassius Marcellus Clay, Sr. (Ali's dad); Joe Martin (the Louisville cop who taught Ali to box); Olympic teammates; Atallah Shabazz (the daughter of Malcolm X who helped convert Ali to the Nation of Islam); trainer Angelo Dundee; Jimmy Carter; Leon Spinks; George Plimpton; Sylvester Stallone; referee Arthur Mercantee; Chuck Wepner (a human punching bag widely known as "The Bayonne Bleeder"); and Carl Walker (the black assistant attorney general who tried to make the federal case against Ali for draft evasion). Overall, Hauser does a good job of marshaling a wealth of facts into a cohesive whole and providing behind-the-scenes glimpses of a ring lion in the autumn, if not winter, of his years. Throughout, however, the author makes almost no attempt to conceal the genuine regard and admiration he feels for his subject. A walkover for Ali but a disappointment for those with even a passing interest in the sweet science's grittier realities. (Kirkus Reviews)

First published in 1991, Thomas Hauser's extraordinary biography
preceded the so-called "Renaissance" of Muhammad Ali that followed his torch-lighting appearance at the Olympic Games in 1996. Since then, an army of books have jumped into publication
aiming to capture the 'true' Ali. Constant revisioning
of Ali's life and his influential presence in the world today
means that journalists across the world always have something to
write about when discussing or debating the importance of the man who is now affirmed by millions as "The Greatest".

Yet, Hauser's book remains for many the definitive account of the story of Muhammad Ali - a deep, complex and inspiring account of an undoubtedly deep, complex and inspiring man, peeling off the myth and gloss of Ali's "autobiography"
THE GREATEST which (along with the subsequent film) has been
largely criticised over the years for presenting a fictionalized
and 'saintly' image of Ali.

Hauser does not fall into the trap of saint-making; we read about Ali's rejection of Malcolm X, his torture of Patterson and
Terrell, his "bullying" of Frazier. We also read of a man who is a paradox: a man who stood up to the U.S. Government, sacrificed his title and faced the angst of America at a time when public figures like were being picked off one by one, yet
was manipulated and abused by those closest to him to the extent that his finances and ultimately physical health was almost sapped.

Yet, it is a credit to Hauser that in spite of his avoidance of saint-making the reader comes away seeing exactly why he (and now most of the world) recognise him as "The Greatest".
A fighter of incredible physical ability and mental strength,
who gained a life-time ambition but sacrificied it when he was
at the peak of his powers, and against all the odds when he was
regarded as the emblem of a bygone era. And yet, in both times of injustice and joy, was always ready to make people laugh,

encourage to believe in themselves and to teach them about the
important things in life.

Of all the Ali autobiographies Thomas Hausers effort must rank as the best, no in fact it is the best! I've read all the other efforts on the living legend which is Ali and no other book takes such an in depth look at his life. I was particulary impressed with the information given on and by many of Ali's close associates, many of whom are unkown to the public. If you enjoy a good read or like me love Ali its a fabulous book.

A uniquely written portrait of Ali forming a verbal tapestry through conversations and opinions from his entourage, old adversaries, promoters, hangers-on, family etc. Contains information on his health situation which a lot of people seem to misunderstand. I got this book as a student in Leeds in 1992 when Ali was 50 and touring the UK. When I got to the bookshop there were 700 people queued outside and builders perched up on scaffolding opposite trying to look and catch a glimpse of the man. This is still the best book on the man I think
