5.0 out of 5 stars The book is simply brilliant, 13 Nov 2001
By A Customer
I cannot say how many times I have read this book, and enjoyed it each time. It contains all the essential elements: Mystery, Intrigue, Fear, Suspense, Romance and Hope. Concentrating on the lives of two teenagers living on the German occupied Channel Island of Guernsey, the book brings to life the struggles and hardships, and also the brighter sides of Tess and Paul's lives as they struggle to grow up in a place where even a piano recital of Beethoven's Fifth is seen as a great victory over the occupiers.
The book deals easily with issues of anti-semitism, young love, underground newspapers, smuggling, and even across-the-divide friendship. A cracking read, with a poignant poem to make you sit up and take notice. Quite possibly the best childrens' historical fiction novel I have come across. Thankyou Mr. Trease

As a Guernsey girl this book is even more interesting to me as i can relate to the places and events i know from our history. It is a fascinating read for anyone though into life on an island growing up under german occupation, dealing with nearly all your friends being evacuated to england, rationing, bombing, living alonside soldiers.. also there is the jewish teacher who goes missing.. i would recommend it to anyone maybe over the age of 10 depending on their maturity :-)
