In this useful guide, Adair provides his own characteristic take on the topic of time management. Like his other books in the series, this one is aimed at management, and is full of business and managerial examples, exercises and relevant expert opinions. But Adair does not limit himself to office hours and draws on time management for life in general. Managing a day means just that, from beginning to end. Adair covers all the expected issues, from planning in the short, medium and long term, through delegation, to managing meetings. Details go as far as reminding the reader of the difference between a policy and a strategy. He warns of the pitfalls such as upward delegation, or more oddly of watching too much television. Adair addresses wider issues by highlighting the importance of 'developing a personal sense of time' and rounds off with a chapter on 'health and holidays'. Only by knowing exactly what time is productive and what is 'waste', Adair argues, can managers strive to make the best use of it. Health and holidays are included from the standpoint that ill health is an interruption to work and holidays are essential to working at optimum. Adair's end-of-chapter bullet summaries are useful recaps, and his concluding summary 'Ten Steps Towards Better Time Management' draws the main messages together. His phraseology helps the reader to appreciate his key points - 'helicopter vision' is an apt and succinct way to remember 'taking a broader and longer look at the work you are doing'. His use of quotations to support his arguments, from American presidents to anonymous anecdotes on sundials, works well in places, but can irritate after a while.
