5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read...., 16 Mar 2002
By Andrew Mills "andym2020" (Bristol, UK.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Julian May's first book in the "The Galactic Milieu Trilogy", chronicles the epic tale of Jack (AKA Jon or Ti-Jean) Remillard's amazing development from foetus in his mother's womb to a young boy, and Marc, his older brother, and Uncle Rogi's desperate struggle to keep him alive...

This is a fantastic story lined with sub-plots that keep you guessing to the end. Julian May develops the main characters well, so that you believe in (despite their almost unbelievable "powers") and feel for them. As in the previous review, "Uncle Rogi" is perhaps my favourite character, possibly because he is a relatively ordinary man (for the times), thrust into the middle of the adventure and is often part of history changing events.

Some people may find Jack the Bodiless a little heavy going at times, but it is worth sticking with it. While this is the first in the trilogy, I would recommend reading Julian May's previous book "Intervention" (an excellent read in itself) beforehand - while it is not necessary to do so, there are some events reference to in it and it does set the scene for the Galactic Milieu Trilogy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic characters, humour, drama and tragedy throughout., 17 Jun 2000
By A Customer
I first read Julian May's Saga of the Exiles in the summer of 1983, I had to wait a further 12 years for the final chapters of this modern epic, but it was well worth the wait. In Jack the Bodiless Julian May Introduces us to the Remillard Family, a fantastically talented group of mental giants and their youngest son Jon or Jack as he is known. Jack is also a Mental heavyweight, the strongest in fact, but is also a mutant with a dying body. The story charts the early part of Jacks life and the childhood of his older brother Marc, a character readers of the Saga of the Exiles will be familiar with. As ever Julian May's character development is amazing and you feel genuine emotions about each of them (I for one am particularly fond of Uncle Rogi, but that's just me). I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who likes their Sci-Fi to have a dash of the intelligent to it.
