5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - brilliantly written, intelligent and accessible, 24 Nov 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Rich are Different (Paperback)
I have read this book five or six times since my first reading when I was 18. I found it totally absorbing and fascinating, from a historical viewpoint as well as getting into the thoughts of the various narrators. Written from the perspective of five different people, a brilliant insight into the way people think and act, and why they do what they do ................

5.0 out of 5 stars Hitsory Repeating Itself, 13 Feb 2007

This review is from: The Rich are Different (Paperback)
This is another marvellous book by Susan Howatch. I know of no other writer who is able to enter the minds of her characters so well and relate their perspective of a situation so convincingly. Although it doesn't say so in the foreward, the characters seem to be based on Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Marc Anthony and Augustus Caesar. This is done very cleverly and lends an awful inevitability to the story, knowing that if it is followed to its logical conclusion there can be only one survivor...!

4.0 out of 5 stars Suprising good, 4 Jan 2008
This review is from: The Rich are Different (Paperback)
I was given this book by a friend as it is not normally the type of 'ongoing' saga novel that I would pick up but was pleasantly suprised. Ms Howatch tells the story from several different view points which is revealing and also poses a problem as to which protagonist you want to root for. Although it was a slow start I was hooked byt he first 100 pages.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK read but not my favourite Howatch
Susan Howatch reveals to her readers how life was lived by the rich. The characters in this book are what makes it work though there is plenty of action. Read more
