(REAL NAME)
Runyon is little remembered these days, it seems. I discovered him back in the 60s from the library - took a flyer on this strange book by some bloke I'd never heard of. I've had my own copy ever since and have supplied them to several other people (a bit harder these days) because they're so damn good. The others have loved them too.

This book (and most of the companion volume, From First To Last) consists of short stories about the demimonde of New York in the 1920s - a cast of gangsters, bootleggers, petty thieves, gamblers, horse players, bent judges, straight judges, coppers, molls and dames: the narrator is an unnamed semi-shady chap on the fringes of all this, who hears all the gossip. This milieu is based, to some extent, on life - some of the characters are recognisable pastiches of real people like Arnold Rothstein, Walter Winchell, and Legs Diamond - and the stories are by turns comic and tragic, and all written with a kind of stumbling loquacity and vivid slang - dolls and Judys, ducats, croakers, scribes - which is utterly compelling.

If you've seen Guys and Dolls, that's taken from Runyon's The Idyll Of Miss Sarah Brown, and is (IMHO) a lot better in the original. Get this book, and get the other one too.
