Product Description

Product Description
Avoiding technical jargon, this guide demonstrates how to enrich and expand a classroom curriculum using the Internet. It combines anecdotes and directions to provide teachers with information on how to incorporate the Internet into their classrooms every day.

Technology Made Humane
It's odd enough to have actually written a book and gotten it published (a lifetime dream of mine), but to have Amazon willing to let me encourage people to buy their own copy - what a deal! I honestly believe that what my students were able to do during an entire school year with the help of email experts is really valuable learning (and also good reading, after the fact). Our class had virtual helpers who volunteered to answer the students' questions during the course of a school year. Our topic was birds, but because of the wonderful way the human mind works (especially the young human mind), we managed to tackle a lot of other fascinating topics along the way. The answers we received were fascinating, thoughtful, and taught us as much about the delights of shared wondering as they did about birds. The book is a blend of our experiences along with concise but clear information about how to do what we did. There's a chapter that explains the different ways people can communicate on the Internet, and the pros and cons of each one in terms of conducting spontaneous student research. My goal in writing the book was to tell our story, and to make it friendly enough that anyone interested would be able to learn from it and want to try the concept. I think it turned out the way I intended. I hope that other teachers will be encouraged to let their students enjoy learning in great depth about what interests them on a specific topic, with on-call help from informed, articulate personal online experts. It's about as fun as learning gets.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for teachers and parents!, 4 Dec 1998
By A Customer
Jessica Morton's "Kids on the 'Net is inspiring. Between the lines it speaks to what 'good' teaching is really about and the lines themselves sing with a clear how to do it for using the net well. A great source for those who want to be creative and for the many who fear, for one reason or another, the use of the internet. It is so well written and presented that I felt like I was reading a terrific story. At t he end I knew I'd done that and more!

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding book to use to get started 'using the net'., 2 Oct 1998
By A Customer
Jessica Morton has an easy way of writing that will make the reader feel she can use the 'net' with young children after reading about Mrs. Morton's successes in her own classroom. She does not use computer language that the average person cannot understand. She not only uses examples from her own classroom but also relates to the reader how to go about beginning using e-mail with simple dos and don'ts. I have used e-mail with my second grade students for many years but while reading this book I discovered some great ways to improve the use of e-mail with my class of 7-8 year olds. A definite book to read!
