4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but just a couple of points..., 4 Dec 1998
By A Customer
This is really a good book with good illustrative cases, although a little American for a non-American audience. It is so comprehensive that it could also be the cure to insomnia!

However, nothing of any value is ever easy to read is it?

4.0 out of 5 stars Written as a postgraduate text, but it offers realistic insights for the experienced manager into how organisations function ., 1 Jul 2008
The author states :

"My mission is to combine the concepts and models from organisational theory with changing events in the real world to provide the most up to date view of organization design available."

This book goes a long way to achieving this and contains some very good case studies. The book links strategy to organisation design and draws on Porter's competitive strategies and the Miles and Snow strategy typology. You would have to be very motivated to read to read all the material, but this is one of those hidden gems that you could easily overlook. It is far superior to the academic waffle that finds its way onto the market, eg - "Organising and managing work" by Tony Watson, see my review of this book.

For books that offer practical/hands on tools, on how to go about organisation design, the following are useful guides:

* Designing dynamic organisations.

* Designing your organisation.

See my reviews of the above.

This book offers real value to anyone interested in organisation design.

Stan Felstead - Interchange Resources UK.
