Product Description

Product Description

This is a signs and symptoms approach to diagnosis which makes identifying and managing large animal disorders easy. It is the first comprehensive, single-volume text to use a problem-oriented approach to the diagnosis of diseases of horses, cattle, sheep and goats. The hallmark of this text is its introduction and discussion of clinical signs to show practitioners how to diagnose based on what they observe and that laboratory and diagnostic tests reveal.

2.0 out of 5 stars A huge disappointment, 15 Jan 2009
This is one of the standards of veterinary medicine, and it is a huge disappointment that the fourth edition is so poor. Almost all the problems come down to editing.
The book is internally inconsistent, with a statement or recommendation in one paragraph being contradicted in the next. There are also many typos and other inconsistencies. Putting the references on CD saves space in the text, but makes them less accessible, and it is particularly annoying to go to the trouble of looking one up, only to find it is wrong or incomplete.
In all, this is a hugely frustrating book. The updates from the previous edition are sporadic, and different section authors and editors have put in vastly different efforts in trying to ensure the quality of the information provided.
If you have the 3rd edition, there is not enough in this new edition to justify the expense. Before the 5th edition, this book needs a major overhaul and a very strong editor to bring it back to its former glory.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a quick/easy reference book, 30 Aug 2009
By Ms. R. J. Benge (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this book as I was going into mixed practice and wanted information on both equine and bovine species. However as a book to carry around in the back of the car, I would not recommend it. It is very wordy and not very clearly laid out. The bovine and equine parts are merged into the same chapters, so you have to decipher which species it is you are reading about. It is useful as an academic reference but not particularly good for quick revision whilst out and about in the car.
