Thermal physics is a deep and interesting subject. However to appreciate any of its beauty you have to slog through a lot of math which can be just plain dull at times. The author of this text hasn't tried to pretty this fact up. The first few chapters are somewhat boring, and at times will put you to sleep. Yet if you persevere you will get to the fascinating parts, which will more than make up for the previous tedium.

I feel this book achieves the goal the title sets out-it thoroughly introduces you too thermal physics while giving a hint of what lays beyond. There are enough worked examples to get you through, although there could be more.

My complaint is thus: there are questions in the book, but no answers whatsoever, so you can't even check if you were wrong. This is the reason I have knocked a star of my rating.

Overall a rewarding read and very useful to anyone taking a first course in Thermal physics.
