2.0 out of 5 stars Better to wait for Colin Moock's AS2 book, 12 Feb 2004
By A Customer
As everyone who's working with FlashMX2004 will already know, the documentation and Help files that accompany the application are woefully inadequate. As someone who feels that a printed dictionary for AS2.0 should have been included in the box (and at around $400 for an upgrade up here in Scandinavia - at least something more than just a CD would've been nice...), then the fact that MM are not charging so much for this volume softens the blow of having to buy it.
BUT (there had to be one, right?) the problem really is that the book is so full of typos and simple mistakes, that it is almost worthless. Even the errata (on the publisher's website) has mistakes! (and gives up without covering even half the mistakes i found).
As far as the dictionary is concerned, if you're expecting something of the standard of Colin Moock's books, you'll be terribly disappointed: the definitions are poorly written, and often innaccurate or simply confusing.
What's more, some of the "Flash Community Leaders" seem to have seen inclusion in the book as an opportunity to market their companies as shamelessly as possible - in one chapter a couple of Scottish guys compete to see how they can mention the name of their company on every page.
If you're a beginner to OOP (as i am), then one chapter is worth reading: Article 5 by Jeff Tapper is a brilliantly clear exposition of the fundamental concepts: i suggest you stand in the bookshop and read that chapter - then send Mr Tapper a few dollars for his efforts. None of the other authors deserve it.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Improved AS Dictionary, 21 April 2004
If, like me you like to have a manual on your lap when working through apainful piece of AS code this is the only real resource from the source. My only reservation is that some of the articles that have been added topad out this book are of mixed quality and some are very self-severingexercises in publicity. The articles directly from MM are better. I wouldhave liked to see a more transparent explanation of components, but youcan find this in Object-Oriented Programming With ActionScript 2.0 byTapper, Talbot & Haffner. All of these complaints are very minor and donot detract from the value of this book, but I would like to see a pocketsized version, it is too heavy to hold on my lap and type for very long.

4.0 out of 5 stars More Than Just a Reference, 18 Aug 2006
By Mr. P. J. Feakins (Surrey, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I don't really agree with the other negative reviews. We have used this book at work for some time now, and if it's always been very helpful. If you don't like the articles, don't read them, but I have found them really helpful.

This is more than just a reference or a dictionary, it has in depth and well-written accounts of object oriented programming. In fact, it has some of the best writing on the subject I've seen.

A great book - I'm just about to buy another copy.
