Product Description

The Series 60 Platform is a multi-vendor, open standards-based platform for one-handed smart phone application development. It delivers applications ranging from Web browsing to games to e-mail and messaging services, as well as other PDA functions including synchronization with PC applications such as Outlook. It also allows for video recording and playback. Nokia not only develops its own smart phones using Series 60 but also licenses this development platform to other smart phone manufacturers. The bottomline: Series 60 presents developers with a compelling opportunity to create a new wave of applications and services for global deployment on handsets from multiple manufacturers. Series 60 Software Development, the first book in the Nokia Mobile Developer Series, will be the official guide for developers creating applications for mobile devices based on the feature-rich Series 60 platform. This book covers the complete suite of development tools available for this platform including Series 60 C++ SDK (software development kit) for the Symbian OS. The authors will also cover browser-based application development using WML and XHTML. The authors will explain how to design, develop, test and debug, and deploy real world applications ranging from games to multimedia messaging.

From the Back Cover

"The robust, advanced technologies of Symbian OS are accessible to developers today in millions of phones worldwide through the Series 60 Platform. Inside Developing Series 60 Applications there are sixty example applications, focused entirely on native Symbian OS C++ programming, which will help developers take advantage of the rapidly growing opportunities in Symbian OS smartphone software development."

—David Levin, CEO, Symbian Ltd.

The first official book on Series 60 Platform development—from design to deployment

Series 60 smartphone developers are deploying the next wave of mobile services. With more than 60% of all mobile phone manufacturers licensing Series 60 Platform, Series 60 represents the smartphone market with the largest user base for mobile application developers.

To help nurture this growing market, Nokia has worked directly with EMCC Software, a leading Symbian and Series 60 Competence Center, to create Developing Series 60 Applications, the definitive guide to Series 60 development for C++ programmers and software designers. Fully reviewed by Nokia's subject matter experts, the authors cover the entire development process—from design, programming, and testing to debugging and deployment—while providing sixty complete projects, each with full C++ source code and installation scripts.

Developing Series 60 Applications includes coverage of:

  • Series 60 development tools, IDEs, and C++ SDKs
  • The underlying Symbian OS
  • Application design with the Series 60 framework architecture
  • User interface controls, menus, dialogs, lists, and editors
  • Basic and advanced Series 60 communications APIs
  • Multimedia development: drawings, fonts, bitmaps, animation, and audio
  • Invoking standard application views and using application engines
  • Building more powerful applications with C++ APIs
  • Series 60 Developer Platforms 1 and 2

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on Series 60, 20 Jul 2004
By John Cairns (Yeovil, England) - See all my reviews
I have been through this book all the way and have to say that content-wise there's not much to fault it. I agree with the comments made above about the slanty diagrams - maybe an M C Escher fan got a bit carried away - but really the INFORMATION is spot on. Both comments I have read complain that the book is too big but doesn't have enough detail. I'm a bit perplexed as to how you could get more detail into a shorter book exactly - maybe by removing all the unnecessary definite and indefinite articles - that should save a page or two. I didn't get the comments about the dialog classes - anything with CAkn on it comes from Series 60 not Symbian and given that dialog based apps are one of three architectural options for S60 I really can't see why you're not supposed to use this base class - but then the reviewer did say they didn't have much Series 60 experience.
Contrary to the rather confused comments above, this book is packed with information - you just have to read it I guess. They haven't spent pages and pages printing out example code text either - just shown you what is needed when it's needed - I really don't understand the criticisms made above. Try reading the Digia book - that has some ludicrous filler material in it - there is just no comparison. There are good examples available - a CD would have been nice rather than having to download from a website though.
The coverage includes all the "have I really got to learn this stuff" from Symbian and (at least) all the major technologies of Series 60 - and not just in some theoretical discussion either - but with practical examples all put together in a coherent manner.
All in all, for Series 60 developers this is a must, regardless of the state of your biceps.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too thick but still not going to details, 19 May 2004
By A Customer
The book is too thick to provide nice reading experience, however on the other hand it's not a reference book since it doesn't give out the details. I would have been better if this would concentrate on S60 since there's other books about the other Symbian libraries and general C++ programming on Symbian.

The books font selection is not properly selected. Why on earth anyone would like to read title text font (sanserif) ~750 pages? The book also wastes space on big margin: I would have like to have thinner book with more content on one page. All the class diagrams/architecture figures are pseudo-3D looking and make them harder to read too!

There's constant reference to SDK documentation, "please see more details from SDK doc". This is quite bad thing, since I'm reading _this_ book and I have thought it should be able to tell me these things! (The SDK docs also do not document most of the things properly.)

With my limited Series 60 experience I found really bad errors from the text too: e.g. in series 60 you shouldn't be using any CAknDialog classes directly. I tried to extend the dialog examples and the result was really nor-working layout and behavior. I was told that you are not expected to use the classes as the book is telling to use. Why on earth the book advocates non-working design? It even has more than 10 pages for this. This made me think whether other areas in the book have similar bad errors.

After the book I still have quite fuzzy picture of how to the available features in Series 60 are realized in real C++ libraries. In addition I don't have good picture how certain features are implemented in other Symban devices, i.e. which features are Series 60 specific and which general in Symbian OS. Also I do not have good picture which general Symbian OS feature should be used in S60 (for example, the dialog example gave be totally wrong idea of this).

The book might be OK if you just starting on Symbian and you know you'll be using Series 60. But you should understand that it's not definately any Charles Petzold type of book about Series 60.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a 'for all you symbian os needs' but a good start., 6 Feb 2006
I got this book when I started my final year project at uni. And I must admit, I am in two minds about it.

On one hand the introduction chapters were useful in grounding me with with the Symbian OS. Although, it does not tell you why things are they way they are in any great detail, it mostly touches on the 'why' but more importantly, to me at least, it tells you the 'how'.

The code snippets were useful, full source code is available on the web for all the examples used in the book so thats very useful too.

Agree with the other review on the diagram point, they are a little odd and I've noticed some misprints also. But hey, at least the paper is of decent quality and not waffer thin!

Overall, this book is not a 'for all you symbian os needs' reference. It is however a pretty good starting point that'll help you get going.
