I have read several books on Illustrator, mostly version 10, but this was far and away the best.
It is a project base teaching aid rather than a reference book, although you will want to go back and review the techniques over and over in the course of your own work.
The explanations in the text really are very clear. It starts from a basic level, but 700 pages later it has covered Illustrator in a fair bit of depth.
The accompanying cd is excellent, when so many others are a wasted opportunity. It contains numerous images to be worked through for each chapter, but in addition it provides numerous very clear (Quicken) videos on a range of topics. A further set of explanatory videos is available on the publisher's web site.
I would confidently recommend this book to anyone intersted in Illustrator, including intermediates or better who want a good grounding in the new features that CS has to offer, including 50 pages on the new 3D feature.

This is an excellent book for beginners to intermediate level illustrator users. The explanations are very clear and the CD gives practical examples for you to build knowledge by doing.
My complaints are that there are no colour pictures and while the examples help you to get the point, they are not particularly inspiring.
I'd would like to have seen more colour illustrations, which really give a sense of just what is possible using this powerful tool.
