Product Description
Book Description
Understanding CMMI- The first unified framework for all process improvement.
Overcoming the limitations of 20th century process improvement systems in 21st century projects.
Choosing appropriate CMMI models and tools for your organization.
Key lessons learned by leading-edge implementers of integrated process improvement. With CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration), top software quality experts have gone far beyond the successful CMM, codifying every aspect of model-based process improvement in one integrated framework. This concise, authoritative guide has three goals- to help understand the benefits of an integrated approach to process improvement; to introduce the CMMI projects new tools for multi-discipline process improvement; and to provide practical guidance in selecting and using these tools. The authors begin by identifying key shortcomings of traditional process improvement in 21st century environments that involve more people and organizations, must be delivered more quickly, and utilize the latest innovations. Next, they introduce the new CMMI standard, showing how it overcomes these limitations, adding substantial quality and value in development, systems engineering, acquisition, and other key areas. Finally, the authors walk through the process of implementing and using CMMI, presenting lessons learned by pioneers in integrated process improvement.
Dennis M. Ahern is an advisory engineer at Northrop Grumman, and co-project manager of the CMMI Product Development Team. He was formerly a faculty member at Yale University. Aaron Clouse is a senior Principal Systems Engineer at Raytheon specializing in engineering metrics and process improvement. He is an author of CMMI. Richard Turner, Senior Research Scientist at George Washington University, serves as the Director of Software Science and Technology within the office of the Deputy Undersecretary of Defense. He was an author of the Integrated Product Development CMM and CMMI. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Synopsis
When the first edition of this book was published in 2001, CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) was largely viewed as a standard that was "on the horizon." In the past two years, CMMI has -- pardon the pun -- matured greatly. CMMI is now a recognized and widely-adopted model. This new edition reflects CMMI version 1.1 (the first edition was based on version 1.0). The book contains expanded coverage on the realized return on investment that can be attained through process improvement with CMMI, and the pioneer case studies have been replaced with broader CMMI-specific experience that will enable the reader to more easily adopt this model. The authors also share their understanding of how the CMMI will continue to adapt and remain relevant for years to come. The result is a handy book that is informative, useful, and appropriate to the reader's needs.

2.0 out of 5 stars CMMI is what?, 28 Sep 2006
I've been consulting in process improvement for 12 years. I've worked with dozens of organisations that follow the principles of the CMM.

After reading the book once I was stumped. So I read it again and I was even more confused. The book talks a lot about the history of CMMI - the founding CMM from engineering, software development etc. but doesn't tell you anything about them specifically - what makes them different.

More importantly, it didn't discuss CMMI in any detail or how to go about using it in any practical situation.

I for one was very disappointed in the book and felt compelled to write a review about it - the first time I've done so after buying and reading 50+ books based on reader recommendations.

In short, the book is poorly organised, provides a brief history of CMM/CMMI but doesn't provide any details or practical examples of how to use it, when to use it or where to use it.
