4.0 out of 5 stars Ideal Text for Beginners, 28 Feb 2004
By Colin E. Manning "Colin M" (Co. Cork, Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is an ideal text for beginners. It goes through all of the technical details of cameras and lighting. And it gives a good start to thinking about photography creatively.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best All-Rounder, 20 Jan 2006
By K Chapman (Edinburgh, Scotland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Photography (Paperback)
I'd recommend this as the ONE book you should shell out on if you want an all round guide to photography. I have owned a couple of guides to photography which have been OK but not very inspiring. To be honest I have found the best way to learn is from the images of photographers I like so I stick to buying work by artists. Most of the 'guide' books I browse through in bookshops look pretty terrible. However, this huge and unwieldy volume(not one for the 'loo library') is great. It covers virtually everything and is illustrated with fantastic, high quality photographs by legendary photographers. I've got a previous version so I guess they are updating the digital bit, but as I mainly use film this book has been indispensable.
Expensive, but then it's worth it as you'll probably not need another unless you want to drill down into a specific area in depth. The only other guide book I'd recommned is something on composition in art and probably not with a photographic bent. Check out Henry Rankin Poore.

1.0 out of 5 stars Scrictly Beginners only, 12 Sep 2007
By G. Kuijpers (Scotland, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Photography (Paperback)
This book tries to cover everything and in doing so manages to cover next to nothing. 90% of the content can be found for free and in greater and better detail on a plethora of photography related websites.
The book only touches the surfaces of every subject and dedicates too much content on old-style chemical (e.g. non digital) photography.
My biggest waste of money on a book in a long time.
