4.0 out of 5 stars OK for leisure users - walkers/climbers should get 25k map, 7 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This is a typical landranger product. Features are mapped in the right places, and the map gives a good idea of the shape of the land.

A lot of tracks and paths are omitted, there is some debateable contouring, vast areas of crag and rocky terrain aren't indicated, and half the paths that are on the map are difficult to see because of the marking of access land boundaries. Don't the OS know that all open land in Scotland is access land anyway? Why cover the map in meaningless purple lines? If we want to know where the boundary of NTS land is, then we'll ask the NTS.

Anyway, rant aside, this is a useful product. The Outdoor Leisure Map is better for walkers and climbers, and the Harvey map is better still, in my view. You just don't get as much coverage with a 1:25,000, so you might need to buy two, rather than one 1:50,000. If the detail on the 25k map could save your life then I think that's a worthwhile investment, otherwise you'll be fine with this Landranger product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Stuff, 16 Jul 2001
Brilliant, this is just the map you need. Nevis is in the right place and so are the rivers and fences. When it comes to mapping Scotland Ordanance Survey can't be beat.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pathetic for hikers, 11 Jan 2008
By Seb (West Midlands, UK) - See all my reviews
I dislike the 1:50,000 landranger maps as the scale is too small. Detail is difficult to see in the best conditions (sitting at home), so imagine using it while walking, or walking in the rain, or walking in the rain and fog. Can you still see it? Even for those people who don't want to actually 'use' the map, the 1:25,000 explorer series maps are much better for understanding the area.

However, for fear of being too harsh, these maps would be good for a few uses. For cycling around the area, these would be perfect (1:25000 would be too difficult to follow on a bike as you'd be moving too quickly). For keeping as a memento of a good day out, great again. And OS maps are always going to be good, regardless of scale.

But for walking, unless your walk is very simple (sticking to obvious large paths) then it would be quite difficult to navigate with a map of this scale, especially around Ben Nevis where lethal cliff edges surround more than half of the 260 degrees around you and white outs in fog/clouds can come out of nowhere. And it's often important to be able to pick out features of the land that help you find where you are on a map, and these features are much easier to see on a 1:2500.

In my opinion, in the case of mountains with big cliffs like this, a 1:25000 really could save your life.
