Review
The latest in the series of Jack Stryker mysteries, this is a good old-fashioned detective story with modern ingredients such as sexual harassment and the more sinister aspects of medical research. Gosling has us guessing right to the end as she builds up an intricate web of possible leads and connections and leads us down numerous blind alleys. The violent death of a university professor, Elise, soon leads to a double murder investigation as a medical student and part-time orderly at the local hospital, Ricky, is found clubbed to death in an alley in a rough part of town. At first it seems like a tragic coincidence, the professor a victim of her jealous husband and the student just another unfortunate mugging statistic. Stryker's team begin to investigate, but, unknown to him, his partner Kate has been receiving threatening phone calls, and as she resolves to hunt down the perpetrator herself, it looks as though the two murders must be linked. And linked they are - but only tenuously: apparent clues turn out to be red herrings and Gosling keeps us guessing to the last. This has all the ingredients of good crime fiction: a well-conceived plot and engaging characters revealed through punchy but elegantly written dialogue, and fast-moving action with just the right amount of suspense. An enjoyable read. (Kirkus UK)
