Probably not the best of this excellent series, but great nonetheless. More black humour than some of the earlier books, and really merciless on the Church. Its great to see that Brother Michael, a far more interesting character than the too-good-to-be-true Bartholomew, continues his advance from bit player to co-star. He really is worthy of a spin-off series, that shows some of his often hinted at covert work for the Bishop of Ely. The plot, as always, is intricate, and has that rare quality of seeming to unfold as real events do, beyond the control of the characters. Excellent all round.
