Product Description

Review

A timely illustrated autobiographical book from the undisputed world heavyweight boxing champion. With stunning and evocative black and white photographs.

Product Description

Lennox Lewis was born in East London of Jamaican parents but from the age of eight was raised in Canada. Indeed, it was for Canada as an amateur boxer that he won the gold medal at the Seoul Olympics in 1988. Now domiciled in England again, he is the first world heavyweight boxing champion Britain has produced in over a hundred years. This illustrated book (with images by the Jamaican photographer Blaise Hart) commemorates Lennox in his own words since he became a champion. "Lennox" tracks Britain's biggest sporting superstar from the night in Las Vegas in 1999, when he was crowned champion by beating the legendary Evander Holyfield. Two colossal championship years saw Lennox reach the depths of sporting disappointment when he was unexpectedly KO'd by the journeyman Hasim Rahman, before his redemptive fourth-round victory over Rahman in November 2001.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great insight into the mind and training of Lennox Lewis, 29 Jul 2002
'Lennox' is a compilation of interviews, articles and superb photographs. Melissa Mathison was given privileged access to Lewis's training camps and even to his pre-fight dressing room.

'Lennox' gave me a great insight into the sheer scale of work that takes place in a training camp and the mind-set of Lennox Lewis. The 6 interviews begin in October 2000 and cover a twelve month period. Interviewees include Lewis himself together with his trainer, Emmanual Steward.

Mathison's account of the build up to Lewis's fight with Hasim Rahman in April 2001 is extremely detailed, beginning with Lewis's cameo in 'Oceans 11' in Las Vegas and including comprehensive descriptions of the pre-fight build-up and atmosphere. I almost felt as though I was part of ther Lewis camp myself and was aware of the tensions within Lewis's dressing room.

The photographs, by Blaise Hart, supplement the writing perfectly but, although they are the largest part of the book, never dominate Mathison's powerful writing. An added bonus, which I found strangely fascinating, is the photo of the high profile bite on Lewis's leg by Mike Tyson.

In all, a must for all boxing fans who have wondered what it is like behing the scenes of a big fight and what it takes to get a man into a physical and mental state to dominate all other fighters. A follow up to this is eagerly anticipated if it catalogues the Lewis-Tyson fight and what Lewis's career now holds.
