If everyone has a story to tell, it's inevitably a memoir, yet some are more memorable than others. Particularly those where 'poignant' isn't a strong enough term. Pregnant at 17, in Glasgow of the 50s, Eileen has no choice but to give up her baby, Barbara. Once the latter discovers the truth, she never gives up searching for her mother. And time is running out; Barbara has cancer. The two women are finally reunited, in Arizona, but Eileen, too, is stricken with the disease, and they have to make the most of the next few months together. As do all Eileen's friends and family, including her three sons and her ex husband, the author. The novelist relives their marriage, his own problems with drink and drugs, but steps back to take on the role of observer so that this heartbreaking yet uplifting tale hits the reader with full force.
