'The case for immigration ... is grounded in hard economic fact, as Philippe Legrain shows in IMMIGRANTS - a passionate and cogent plea for liberalising migration' FINANCIAL TIMES Energetic and right-minded ... 1.0 out of 5 stars Simplistic fantasy, 21 Feb 2008
By Big Dug Simba (London, UK) - See all my reviews
As a sixth-form debater the author would score high for his single-minded determination to defend the motion but by the same token he ignores or dismisses anything that doesn't fit.

Some polemics give food for thought even if you disagree with them but this is a waste of time: the economic calculation that a growing economy needs more workers is blatantly obvious and quickly stated - and that's about it. All the other factors, like the Welfare State, are left outside the equation or dismissed with contempt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why everyone should read this book, 16 Feb 2007
By Daniel (London) - See all my reviews
As the review below shows, the book makes a very strong case for Immigration which will ignite the argument even more.

Opinions are hard to change, and ultimately this book's existence is not to "convince" people that Immigration is good under all points of view and magically make all anti-immigration "conservatives" change their minds on the whole subject. It is to show one side of the argument, and as such, it is an absolutely brilliant book which is easy enough to read, with interesting stories told with a gripping and fast-paced writing style.

Anti-immigration people will still be anti-immigration after reading this book: I actually expect that some will be even more anti-immigration afterwards, as they will be naturally inclined to disagree with most of Legrain's points, and come to the end resenting the "liberalism" - as Mr Brooks calls it - while agreeing with themselves.

Pro-immigrationists do not need convincing and will find this book extremely pleasant to read.

Whether you might agree or disagree with Legrain's points, it is obvious that anyone who is an immigrant or anyone with an interest in this hot topic should read this book.

In conclusion, both sides will go through this un-missable book, each with different feelings, and each with largely unchanged opinions. It is undeniable that they should read it nonetheless.

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling case, 31 Jan 2007
By Chris Foster (London, UK) - See all my reviews
Legrain's analysis of mass migration to the rich countries of Europe, Australasia and the Americas has the same blend of hard facts, close argument and on-site reportage as his book on globalisation, Open World. He demonstrates that migration is good for the migrants and, contrary to received wisdom, good for the countries they leave. Of perhaps greater interest to readers in the rich West is what it means for us. Legrain makes the case for the cosmopolitan cultural benefits of immigration, but it is the economic argument that is most compelling. Without immigration we face skills shortages, pensions crises and serious questions about who will care for the sick and the elderly - jobs we don't want to do.
It is a very strong case, made well. The book could hardly be more timely, as immigration is becoming a major social and political issue across the West. Legrain's book is an important contribution to the debate, exploding myths and casting fresh light on the 'problem'.
