5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Writing, 23 Jul 2007
By An English Reader (Wiltshire, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rosetta (Paperback)
Possibly the lovliest book I've read in years. The writing is controlled, lyrical, intensely dramatic. Characters are very fully realised, even if the villains are just about 100% villainous. There isn't even a whiff of 'plum pudding' about this book. It's superb writing, through and through, and deserves to be savoured, word by word, and phrase by phrase. Ms. Ewing can WRITE.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plum pudding of a historical novel?, 3 Jul 2007
By Ms. C. Trevien "pyuebx" (buckingamshire) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Rosetta (Paperback)
This isn't your usual historical-romantic fiction, au contraire, it has a head and it has a heart. Ewing has an excellent grasp of human psychology and her dwelling on the institutions of marriage and celibacy is particularly praisable. The story is set against the backdrop of the french revolution in England, Ewing really makes the most of this turbulent time, industrial revolutions, the increasing atheism (notably of Shelley), the large amount of novels written by women, an awareness that homosexuality exists and of course discoveries such as the rosetta stone all have a place in her novel. Ewing makes use of the novel format, but also when useful, of epistles. A gripping read, highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great historical fiction, 29 Feb 2008
By Blencathra (West Yorkshire.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rosetta (Paperback)
The Napoleonic period is a popular period in which to set historical fiction, but few will tackle it better than Barbara Ewing. Strong characters firmly set in their times, a cracking, page-turning plot, all held together with some superb writing; I was completely gripped from start to finish. One of the few occasions where the book totally lives up to the blurb. My one surprise is that this is only the third review - how come other much lesser books attract so much interest when there are books like this to be found?
