Product Description

Review
'Yet again Linda Fairstein brilliantly orchestrates a page-turning mix of cutting-edge legal issues, forensics, New York City history and suspense.' RTE Guide 'Fairstein, whose professional resume includes groundbreaking work in the field of sex crimes prosecution, manages to both entertain and educate, as Alex Cooper struggles wth the evidentiary challenges of the Warren rape case and with tracking a vicious serial killer' PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

Product Description
Success can never be guaranteed in every case Alexandra Cooper prosecutes, but for once the odds are with her; she is able to put away a serial rapist for a crime he committed over twenty years previously. Outside the courtroom another predator is at large. His first victim was a call-girl, a cat-o-nine-tails discovered near her body, and it seems as though Detectives Mike Chapman and Mercer Wallace need to look amongst her clients for the killer - but the discovery of other corpses, the modus operandi remarkably similar to the first, turns the investigation into a hunt for a random and viciously sadistic murderer. A part of the killer's signature is that in the humid heat of summer he leaves his victims' remains in some of the least populated parts of New York - a derelict office building, an abandoned fort on an island below Manhattan. Alex fears it may be another twenty years before they can identify this monster, each day bringing the dread of news of another killing. Then she, Chapman and Mercer get lucky and are able to give a name to their target. But that's not the same as putting him safely behind bars: to do that they are going to have to get close to him, much too close for Alex's own safety ...

4.0 out of 5 stars Another cracker for Fairstein, 16 Feb 2008
I love Linds Fairstein's novels, the stories always appear life-like and real and this novel is no different. Alex Cooper is a New York sex crimes prosecutor (Linda Fairstein was the ADA for sex crimes in Manhattan before retiring to continue her writing)who works tirelessly to bring justice to those who are victims of sex crimes. she works hand in hand with the two other main characters Chapman - New York homicide detective and Mercer - a detective with the Special Victims Unit. The novels full of interesting facts about New York and the legal system there. I often have to remind myself that these are novels as they read as if they were taken straight out of the authors past cases(which is not the case) This is the 8th novel in the series which in involves a cold case which can now be closed with the introduction of DNA and a series of murders which leads all three characters to the dark unfamiliar islands surrounding the Manhattan area to help catch equally dark perpetrator.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 18 Feb 2008
By M. D. Ward Ward (Leicester) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having read all the previous Alexandra Cooper thrillers I eagerly anticipated this new one.
I was however bitterly disappointed to discover that about one third of the book was given over to both historical and geographical facts about New York.
Although this might be interesting in a different context it is entirely superfluous in a work of fiction.
It as if the author is saying "look how clever I am researching all these facts".

1.0 out of 5 stars No more Fairstein for me!, 8 Feb 2008
By zxqz (Netherlands) - See all my reviews
I have read all of Linda Fairstein's books and each one is harder to get through then the last one. Although I like reading about the unknown New York landmarks she uses as a backdrop for the story, I find it impossible to feel any sympathy for the main character, Alexandra Cooper. She must be the most boring, one-dimensional fictional character there is. In every book she gets hit on the head and every time I hope the damage is permanent, alas... Other than that, the story is predictable and the prose just bearable. The other thing that gets on my nerves is that each book has exactly the same paragraph about the background of each of the characters. I didn't finish this book and threw it in the bin. I couldn't care less what happens next to Ms Cooper and her boring friends!
