4.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating insight into the Normandy landings, 30 Jun 2004
By I. Holden (Hampshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is an enjoyable account of the lead-up to the D-Day landings. It follows the lives of those caught up in the Normandy landings from the great and the good (including Churchill, Eisenhower, De Gaulle) to the average men or women at war (a young English WREN, Canadian and US soldiers, a German soldier, French resistance fighters, a Norwegian POW and a Jewish immigrant hiding in Paris). It reads like a novel and is actually quite gripping, even if you do know what happens. I was especially fascinated by the workings of the British double agent sending false information about Allied intentions from London. It certainly helped me realise what a precarious operation the Normandy landings were.

I suspect that for those that are already quite familiar with D-Day history this might be rather "light-weight", but I found it to be an extremely good introduction to this area of history and has left me wanting to read a more detailed account.

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome surprise, 5 Feb 2009
This book was a great surprise, as it was a cheap mass market book I did not expect too much from it, however, I was very pleased that I bought it.
I am an avid military history enthusiast and I have read several hundred books regarding the second world war. There was a surprising amount of information in this book that I have not read before, and the cronological format of events from several different perspectives in very refreshing.
If you are interested in the subject matter, I highly reccommend this book. It is considerably better than some of the more famous tomes from very well respected authors. 5 out of 5 for me.
