Product Description

Review

""Most golfers look at their courses with a mixture of pleasure and nervous anticipation. GOLF BY DESIGN "will help you to see the course in a new, more confident way and will enhance your appreciation of both its natural and designed elements...Better yet, it will improve your game."

Product Description

Drawing on a lifelong passion for the game, the author shares the expertise he has gained as a premier golf course architect and skilled player. In this instructional book he shows readers how to maximise their shot-making abilities by thinking their way around a course and studying it from an architect's perspective. The architect has designed his course to defend par and this book shows how they think, taking the golfer step-by-step through a variety of different course types showing how the reader can overcome the challenges. The golfer will not only learn all the tricks of the trade but, most importantly, learn to look at the game and the course in terms of logistics and attack plans. The book is filled with anecdotes and examples from specific courses that Jones has designed and/or played on and hundreds of instructive illustrations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different view on golf instruction, 26 Jun 2001
By A Customer
Robert Trent Jones has created an instructional book on golf with a twist. Not once does he mention swing keys or thoughts, never does he discuss the flight of the golf ball or the strike, rather he tries to help golfers lower their scores by educating them as to the way a designer thinks when he is creating a hole. He identifies the different types of hazard used by the architect and explains the placement of each hazard in order to make the hole play in a certain fashion. He explains the manner in which the designer uses various optical illusions to fool the golfer into thinking things are more complex than they truly are. All in all this product explains how the truly great course designers try to control the thoughts of the player on each hole, and how the player can break out of the architect's control and play each hole to their strengths. In addition to this it contains anecdotes too numerous to mention and photographs and sketches of both the concept and finished article of some of Trent Jones most impressive courses. Highly recommended.
