Product Description

Already a classic in the genre, Do What You Are has helped hundreds of thousands of people find truly satisfying work. Do What You Are introduces Personality Type - how you process information, make decisions and interact with the world around you - and shows you which of the 16 types describes you best. It lists dozens of occupations that are popular with people of your type. Then, using workbook exercises and real-life examples to highlight the strengths and pitfalls of each personality type, it shows you step-by-step how to use your unique strengths to customise your job search, ensuring the best results in the shortest period of time. And if you plan to stay in your job, Do What You Are provides savvy advice for getting the most out of your current career. Every other career guide offers generic, one-size-fits-all advice. But because it is based on personality type, Do What You Are helps you determine what you need to be more successful and satisfied.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice idea, lost it's way though, 4 Nov 2002
By A Customer
You finish the first chapter delighted to have discovered your 'type'. You expentently read the next part and end up wondering if you were right in your self assessment from the first. And thus you proceed, each chapter prompting a re-read of all the previous ones, by confusing you with all sorts of contradictions and unhelpful generalisations. And your reward for this perseverance? A long and broad list of possible careers, 90% of which are repeated for the other three of the sixteen personality types you narrowed yourself down to, leading you to think that personality probably doesn't even matter. If, as I suspect, these career listings are taken from a database of what jobs people of certain types do (rather than what they should do), there's a fair chance they probably all need to read a good career guidance book.

I hope this is just a bad 'Myers Briggs' style book. If it is representative of the theory, I'm far from convinced. As for the 'career' section, it is so generalised that most intelligent people will glean one thing from it: A wide variety of people could do the same job, but they may enjoy it for different reasons. How useful was that?

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone who is leading an unfulfilling life., 29 Dec 1996
By A Customer
Have you ever wondered why many people act differently at work than they do at home? They usually reply when asked, "It's only my game face. I'm not really the person I portray at work." Instead, wouldn't you like your job to "adjust" to you? By reading "Do What You Are," anyone can achieve this goal. Paul D. Tieger & Barbara Barron-Tieger take their readers on a journey to meet face-to-face with their homunculus. Please note, LSD is not required for this trip. :-)

They provide each reader with a way of analyzing his or her personality without much of the technical jargon one receives while lying on a doctor's couch. However, they take the time to thoroughly explain personality characteristics and how those characteristics, in specific combinations, define each personality type. Note: Anyone who has ever taken a Myers-Briggs exam will feel right at home with this book. They give new meaning to the word "maturity" by talking about the development path each of us takes as we move through life. Because of the accuracy of each of the personality type sections, I find them to be the most exciting. Everyone I asked to read this book, myself included, quickly identified with a personality type and found that they had worked in (or have contemplated) a job in one of the careers listed with their respective personality type.

After reading this book, you should have no problem in finding a job that matches "who you are." Overall, this book is not a panacea for preventing you from being downsized or developing an ulcer from your job stresses. It is, however, an alternative look at what defines us as individuals, and therefore what motivates us in the workplace.

I gave this book a "10" because it offers all the tools necessary to make a successful career change: 1) useful information about me (non-generic), 2) career possibilities, 3) career strategies, and 4) a list of additional resources.

5.0 out of 5 stars Valuable information with sharp, real-life application, 26 Jul 1998
By A Customer
Do What You Are is a well prepared book that anyone in search of a well-fit career should read. It was extremely understandable, and not only explained why personality type is so important in a job search, but also let you figure out your own type, and find the perfect place in the job world. It gives job listings, per personality type, and let's you use your own interests to figure out what career might suit you best. Very Very recommended for not only understanding the people around you, but also for understanding WHY a job is satisfying and how to know what job would satisfy you most!
